The M54A2 Cargo Truck, part of the M39 series 5-ton 6x6 trucks (G744), was a rugged heavy tactical vehicle developed for the United States Armed Forces. Produced from 1951 to 1969, it evolved from postwar recommendations in the 1945 Cook and Stillwell Board Reports, aiming to replace inadequate 2.5-ton trucks with a more capable 5-ton hauler. Designed for all-terrain and all-weather operations, the M54A2 could transport a 10,000-pound (5-ton) cargo load off-road, doubling to 20,000 pounds on highways, making it ideal for logistical support in demanding environments.

Key specifications include a curb weight of approximately 19,800 pounds, dimensions of 299 inches long, 97.8 inches wide, and 117.5 inches high, a top speed of 54 mph, and a range of about 300 miles. It featured a 6x6 drivetrain for superior off-road mobility, powered initially by gasoline engines in pre-1964 models, with later variants shifting to multifuel capabilities for versatility. The standard cargo bed measured 14 feet long with low sides, a bottom-hinged tailgate, and optional drop sides for easier forklift loading as in the M54A1C variant. Additional options included a front-mounted winch for recovery and a ring mount for an M2 Browning machine gun, enhancing its defensive role.

The M54A2 became the backbone of U.S. Army and Marine Corps heavy cargo transport during the Vietnam War, where it also served as the base for improvised "Gun Trucks" armored with field-applied plates and mounted weapons like M60s or .50-caliber machine guns to protect convoys. Its durability and adaptability made it a staple for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and allied forces, proving essential in global military operations. Today, restored M54A2s are prized by collectors and museums for their historical significance in mid-20th-century warfare logistics
